Sophie Traynor Website Review

Sophie Traynor has established a strong identity through her online portfolio using a bold house style and perhaps purposeful lower-case typography. Sophie's use of pink and female models implies a strong sense of femininity and power as all the beauty and fashion shots emphasise confidence. The overall appearance of the artist’s website is visually appealing, using a neat layout that gives a clean look to the work, everything is equally spaced and sized.

However, this website showcases the photographer’s versatility within her industry, presenting an edited selection of images for Beauty, Fashion, Food and Product which are categorised into separate portfolios/subsections. Moreover, each portfolio establishes the artist’s style of photography. For example, Sophie’s food portfolio uses similar conventions of a neutral background and brightly colour food that is generally centralised. Even though the images show similar visual aesthetics, they all have a sense of individualism or could appear as part of a short series due to settings and props. The overall style of the portfolio helps the viewer take in the work, this is especially important when it is displayed as part of a collage as it can be overwhelming and hard to view. I especially like the ability to isolate one image and click through them like a gallery because it is easier to focus. On the other hand, I thought the combination of close-ups, overhead and long shots works well within the collage layout, but the option is still available to view singularly.

These conventions help build a strong online presence that the audience could recognise as Sophie Traynor’s. Her photographic identity is present within her visual aesthetics within the images and the layout and theme of the website. Furthermore, the text on her ‘about’ page is quick and snappy, written as if she is actually speaking to the viewer. This is a pleasant choice of content as it helps the audience envision the photographer’s personality through their dialect.
